A charity helping homeless people has welcomed a potential £50,000 boost to its urgent fundraising appeal.

Shrewsbury Ark said an anonymous donor was offering to match donations up to that amount for its Save the Ark campaign.

Director Anton Goodwin said: "This is an incredible philanthropic gift, and we are forever indebted to our anonymous donor's generosity."

The charity said it had received £30,000 in the appeal's first month, and was encouraging people to sign up for monthly donations or give in lieu of Christmas presents.

The Ark provides day care for people living on the streets in Shrewsbury, including bunks during its opening hours alongside hot food, bathroom and laundry facilities.

The appeal was launched in October as the charity said it feared for its survival through the winter due to rising costs and income.

With the exception of some council-supported winter provision, it said it relied on charitable donations.

Mr Goodwin said: "It's vital the Ark continues to keep its doors open, to give people the essential support they need, and the opportunity to make positive changes in their lives."

He added the charity was currently supporting nearly 30 people without a home to go to, four of who were women.

"A huge thank you to everyone who has supported this campaign. We are so grateful to all in the community who have donated to secure our immediate financial position," he said.
