A woman who has been celebrating her 101st birthday, says the key to a long life is to "see the good side of everyone".

Olive Parsons, from Coventry, received 266 birthday cards on Wednesday and celebrated with friends at the Coundon Care Seniors' Club, in Tile Hill.

The party featured musical acts, 1920s-themed games and all of her favourite food.

Her son, Roy, said his mother was "very special" and "always likes to have a good laugh".

Speaking during the party, Mr Parsons said the seniors' club and a good set of neighbours have helped keep his mother busy.

"The fact that she can socialise with a lot of people rather than just me at home is great - it's like another group of friends," he said.

"I think her positive outlook on life is key and she always likes to have a good laugh and likes to go out and be active in the garden."

Ms Parsons, who has lived in Coventry throughout her life, said of all of the events she has lived through in the past 10 decades, the start of World War Two was the most significant.

"Having the war come along - that changed a lot of attitudes," she said.

"With so much change, you've just got to go with it - you enjoy it or you loathe it, it's up to you.

"I try to see the good side of everyone and be friendly, that's the only thing."
