A murder investigation has begun after a 62-year-old man who was attacked in a street later died.

Lancashire Police said Gary Carlisle, from Preston, died in hospital on Wednesday after he was found with serious injuries on Ribbleton Hall Drive, close to Moor Nook School, shortly after 06:00 GMT on 12 March.

A man in his 30s from Preston was arrested near the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and has since been detained under the Mental Health Act.

The force said the investigation was now continuing and appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Det Chief Insp John McNamara said: "First and foremost my thoughts are with Mr Carlisle's loved ones. His family are being supported.

"This is now a murder enquiry and whilst we have made an arrest, I would continue to appeal to anyone who has any information or footage which could help us piece together exactly what happened to get in touch."
