Police have arrested 25 people during protests in support of the proscribed group Palestine Action in Leeds.

The individuals were arrested on suspicion of supporting a proscribed organisation during a demonstration held by the Defend Our Juries campaign group in Dortmund Square earlier, West Yorkshire Police said.

A force spokesperson said officers "work hard to balance the right to peaceful and lawful protest with the rights of the public to go about their daily lives".

They said they had tried to minimise disruption and a police presence remained in the area.

Palestine Action was banned after alleged attacks on an Israel-based defence firm's UK site and two planes at RAF Brize Norton.

The ban on Palestine Action, which began on July 5, made membership of, or support for, the direct action group a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

At various protests since then, hundreds have been arrested for showing support for the group.

Co-founder Huda Ammori is taking legal action against former home secretary Yvette Cooper's decision to proscribe the group under anti-terror laws.

A further court hearing is due to take place in late November.
