It was alleged that Mr Hickey was driving a Volvo XC40 when he struck Mr Lupton's vehicle on Thorpe Lane on 26 July 2022. Mr Lupton, who lived in Ampleforth, died in James Cook University Hospital on 14 August.
Mr Hickey, of St Hilda's Walk in Ampleforth, will next appear at York Crown Court on 21 October to enter a plea to the offence.
