A major road has closed overnight for almost two weeks for resurfacing work.

Cumberland Council apologised to motorists for the inconvenience but said the improvements on the A7 between Harker and Blackford in Carlisle were "essential".

Diversions will be in place from 19:00 to 06:00 BST and the route is due to reopen fully on 22 September.

The council also said traffic marshals would be stationed at closure points to escort residents and businesses safely through the work site.

Residents and business owners are being encouraged to plan their journeys in advance.

The council said the road would be open to emergency service vehicles throughout the work.
