Funding to support environmental projects

Environmental and student research projects in Guernsey have received £40,000 in funding.
The Nature Commission said it awarded the funding to a total of 18 projects, 14 environmental and four student research, from its strategy for nature fund to address threats to the natural environment.
It said the support would cover a range of schemes including the restoration of dune grassland, enhancement of school grounds for nature, replacement barn owl boxes and support for La Société Guernesiaise's conservation herd.
Julia Henney, senior natural environment officer, said the projects were "essential" to learn, enhance biodiversity and engage with the community.
'Really excited'
"Since it was first established in 2020, the strategy for nature fund has enabled a wide range of fantastic community and charitable projects," she said.
"We were really excited to see such a range of projects and research applications submitted in this funding round."
The Nature Commission said the fund was established to recognise the strategy for nature needed support and action from the community.
It said the projects needed to address threats such as invasive species, pollution, lack of land management, climate change and gaps in knowledge and understanding.
Four bursaries were awarded for research projects, including to compare plant-pollinator networks and research conservation grazing, it added.
Angela Salmon, head of operations and education at the Nature Commission, said the number of applications had increased "which reflects people's desire to support Guernsey's natural environment".
"It was particularly pleasing to receive applications from schools wanting to connect children with nature", she added.
