A number of roads are closed in Cumbria due to flooding

A number of roads are shut due to flooding as heavy rain batters north-west England.

A yellow weather warning for rain is in place across Cumbria until midnight, with seven flood warnings also issued.

Cumberland Council warned localised flooding had made some roads in the north and west of the county impassable.

They are the St Bees to Egremont road at Outrigg; the A5086 junction with Dalzell St near Egremont; Kingmoor Road, Carlisle, at the railway bridge; Houghton Road at Houghton and Stockbridge Road between Newbiggin and Stubb Place.

A spokesman for the council urged motorists to be drive to the conditions.

"Please do not drive through flood water, if in doubt, turn around," he said.

Flood warnings are in place for:

  • The Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwentwater in Keswick

  • The Rivers Ehen, Calder, Irt and Esk, near Egremont

  • The Rivers Lowther and Eamont, near Penrith

  • The Upper River Eden in Appleby-in-Westmorland

  • The Rivers Kent and Bela in Kendal

  • The Rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster in the Windermere area

  • The Rivers Duddon, Crake and Mill Beck, near Broughton-in-Furness
