A road in Hexham has been closed and homes evacuated after a chimney collapsed.

It happened at a property on Hallstile Bank at about 17:00 BST, leaving a gaping hole in a roof and rubble on the ground.

The fire service attended and confirmed there was no one in the property at the time, and there were no injuries.

Northumberland County Council said its building control team would be assessing the damage as soon as possible, but the road would remain closed overnight.

The gas and electricity to the property have been isolated and the neighbouring properties were evacuated as a precaution.
