Winning Bake Off has 'changed my life'

The winner of this year's Great British Bake Off has said the experience has been a "dream" that has changed her life.

Georgie Grasso, 34, who works as a nurse at Carmarthen, became the hit show's first Welsh winner following 10 weeks of fierce competition against 11 other competitors.

"I couldn't believe I was the first Welsh person to get to the final - let alone win," she said.

"It certainly adds to the achievement of not just winning the whole show, but a win for Wales too. Just a dream."

"It was something I never imagined I could achieve, for someone who's so self doubting," Georgie told BBC Cymru Fyw.

"I always wanted to apply but thought my baking was too amateur... I'm so incredibly proud of myself and I don't say that often."

She said that filming for the show ended in July and that she had to keep the secret until November.

"It was such exiting news, there was a couple of times where I wanted to announce it to my family.

"But I really wanted to have everyone together to watch the final so I kept that in mind and managed to get through the months of secrecy," she said.

Following her success, she said she received a lot of support online, especially for speaking openly about living with ADHD.

"The love and well wishes have been incredible and I'm so proud to have been an advocate for people with ADHD."

So, what does one of the nation's best amateur bakers cook for Christmas? Well this year, a goose dinner for around 10-12 people.

"As well as that, I always do a turkey so I can make pie and baguettes in the days after Christmas," Georgie said.

As for desert, she said she always makes "her favourite" cranberry frangipane, but added the "children aren't that keen so will make chocolate profiteroles filled with cream for them".

"I don't mind cooking Christmas Day, it's part of the joy."
