Dog found dead after escaping from kennels

Gustav, a three-year-old daschund, went missing from a kennel in East Yorkshire and was found dead five days later

A dog has been found dead near a railway line, days after escaping from kennels.

Gustav, a three-year-old daschund, escaped from the Jarratt Hills Kennels and Cattery in Broomfleet, East Yorkshire, on 15 August, prompting a large-scale search.

Simon Wride, the dog's owner, said: "The grief is quite overwhelming and, quite frankly, it's just swallowed us up."

The owners of the kennel said the incident was "tragic", adding measures had been implemented to prevent future escapes.

Gustav was described as 'unique' and 'special' by his owner

Gustav's body was found on Monday evening by a member of the public, Mr Wride said.

He told the BBC the dog was "much loved" and the "life and soul of the party".

Mr Wride, who was on a family holiday when Gustav escaped, added: "We've always had dogs but he was unique. He was just one of those animals that everyone seemed to take to and he was a very special animal."

According to the kennel, Gustav escaped while being moved through a compound.

'Care and love'

Following the escape, the family posted an appeal on social media which was shared hundreds of times and led to offers of help.

Volunteers travelled from as far away as Doncaster to help with the search and drone pilots also offered their services.

Mr Wride said: "The outpouring of emotion and the help that we received from the local community and further afield has been incredible. People really went above and beyond."

'Rare'

Jarratt Hills Kennels and Cattery Ltd said they had implemented "further measures" to prevent escapes, after seeking advice from East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

They added: "Escapes from kennels are rare but not unknown. However, we have never experienced a tragedy such as this.

"We can only imagine the pain and hurt the family is going through and pass on our sincere condolences for their heartache and distress."
