Engineers say a sub-sea cable that brings internet services to Tiree in the Inner Hebrides was damaged by Storm Amy.

The cable connects the island with Tobermory on Mull.

Communications company OpenReach said the damage became apparent after power was restored to Tiree following last week's severe weather.

Gusts of 96mph were recorded on the island at the peak of the storm.

OpenReach said more engineers were expected to arrive on Tiree by ferry.

A spokesperson said: "They'll set-up temporary connectivity for the community, while we work on a permanent fix.

"In the meantime, we appreciate the patience and understanding of everyone affected."

Repairs are also being made to a sub-sea cable which brings internet services to Shetland.

The cable was damaged in rough seas on Friday in shallow waters about a mile off the coast of Orkney.

Communications company OpenReach said some broadband services in Shetland had been affected, including Talk Talk customers in Lerwick.
