An eight-year-old girl has been taken to hospital after being struck by a car in the south of Scotland.

The accident happened on the A747 near to Monreith in Dumfries and Galloway at about 10:50 on Tuesday and involved a black Mitsubishi L200.

Police said the child had been taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for treatment where she remains in a serious condition.

The road was closed for around nine hours to allow investigators to carry out inquiries at the scene and anyone with further information has been asked to come forward.
