A woman has died and a child was seriously injured after a limousine and a car collided at a crossroads.

Northamptonshire Police said the crash, involving a black Mercedes 220E and a black Citroen DS3, occurred at the junction of Wellingborough Road and Broughton Road near Pytchley at about 22:15 BST on Monday.

The victim, aged in her 40s, died at the scene and a nine-year-old girl, who was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital, were both passengers in the Mercedes.

Officers said a 53-year-old man from Sandy, Bedfordshire, and a 22-year-old man from Wellingborough had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Both men remain in police custody and the force did not disclose the grounds on which they were being questioned.

Another adult and three children who were travelling in the Mercedes limousine and an adult and child passenger in the Citroen were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Officers have appealed for anyone with information about the collision to contact them on 101.
