Guests and staff had to leave the Premier Inn in St Helier at midnight on Thursday after smoke filled one of the corridors and set off a fire alarm.

Jersey Fire and Rescue service were alerted when smoke became visible on the second floor of the Premier Inn Hotel in Bath Street.

On arrival the first crews prepared to enter with two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus with a medium hose.

A room on the second floor was quickly identified as being the main cause for concern but once access had been gained, it was quickly established that there wasn’t a fire in this room, although the smoke did originate from it.

The cause and origin of the smoke remains under investigation.

The force confirmed that due to the potential for this to have been a large incident the States of Jersey Police and the Ambulance Service also responded.
