A coin dating back to the 17th Century has been discovered in Guernsey.

Metal detectorist Nicola White said she found the coin from the 1600s on the grounds of Sausmarez Manor on Wednesday.

The coin, worth 1/8th of a Livre Tounois, a medieval French currency, dates back to between 1655 and 1658 during the reign of Louis XIV.

Ms White said the coin was considered “rarer than scarce” and she also found a modern gold ring and current currency during her search.

She said: "It's every detectorist's dream to find really old coins and this coin was an absolute highlight.

"It's not often I find something from this time period - it was a real thrill."

The coin would have been an accepted currency before Guernsey began producing its own money in the 19th Century, as both French and British coinage was accepted as legal tender.

The coin has been given to the land owner.
