Demolition starts in revamp of old school site

Storms caused extensive structural damage to the building in 2024

Demolition work has begun on a dilapidated town centre building as part of a regeneration project.
Contractors have started stripping the roof of the former Stanley Board School on Front Street after repair work was deemed financially unviable.
Having suffered extensive structural damage due to stormy weather in 2024, Durham County Council approved the building's demolition earlier this year.
Karbon Homes, which purchased the site in 2023, said the aim was to repurpose the site and bring a boost to the area.
Initial options proposed for the site included creating a youth centre, housing, a business and community hub or cafe.
A mixed-use venue hosting pop-up events and traders was also proposed, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
'Rebuilding pride'
Identified as a potential roosting place for bats - a protected species under UK law - demolition of the building was approved by the council subject to the applicants acquiring the requisite licence.
Sarah Robson, executive director of development and regeneration at Karbon Homes, said: "A team are already set up at the site, clearing vegetation, carrying out asbestos surveys and stripping the roof."
She added that the first phase of the work is expected to be completed in November.
Built in the late 1800s, the three buildings that make up the school are in the pedestrianised part of the town.
It was previously owned by the county council but has stood empty for several years.
A previous proposal to convert it into apartments did not materialise.
Ms Robson added: "The site's redevelopment remains a key element of the wider work we're doing in Stanley to help strengthen the community, increase footfall and vibrancy on the Front Street and rebuild pride in the place for local people.
"We will continue to keep the local community and key stakeholders informed as our future plans develop."
