The go-ahead has been given to turn a disused garage into a new community arts venue.

Wiltshire Council has approved the planning application for the proposals next to Cousin Norman's cafe and bar on Union Road in Chippenham.

It would include a recording studio as well as performing arts and events space.

Artel31, the firm behind the application, said the developer will be “creatively” reusing and improving the existing building.

It stated: “We would envision this space being used for local arts markets, performances, workshops, events and exhibitions alongside music and drama practice.

“This is a unique opportunity for Chippenham and would bring a great benefit to the local area and music scene.”

Although Wiltshire Council has approved the scheme, it has done so under the condition that a noise management plan must be submitted before the venue can be used.

Artel31has provided an acoustic report recommending noise measures, including performances not being allowed to continue after 23.00.
