A man has been jailed for repeatedly attacking a woman who was left scared to leave her own home.

Jonathan Farrelly's, 36, ex-partner sustained "substantial bruising" across her body in the incident last October, police said.

Farrelly, of Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, was convicted of two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of breaching a restraining order when he appeared at Taunton Crown Court on 17 April.

He was sentenced to 21 months in jail.

Avon and Somerset Police said Farrelly had repeatedly attacked his former partner.

In her victim impact statement, the woman said her house had "no longer felt like a home".

"My world got smaller and smaller. It was easier if I did nothing, just stay in the house with the kids," she said.

"All I want now is some peace for my family. I want my children to feel safe and happy in their home.

"I need us to work as a family to get over the effects that living with Jonathan has impacted on us."

Det Insp Scott Westbrook-Smith said Farrelly has "now been held accountable" for his actions.

"His sentence reflects the seriousness of repeated domestic abuse and the harm it causes to victims and families," he said.

"We hope this outcome brings a sense of justice and relief to the victims involved."
