A man on a family walk was rescued after he fell more than five metres into a river in Derbyshire.

The family had been on a walk in Chee Dale on Sunday when one of the group slipped and fell into the River Wye.

The Buxton Mountain Rescue Team said the group called for help and other family members swam to assist the injured man.

The rescue team said the casualty was assessed at a "challenging location", where a spinal injury could not be ruled out, but the team confirmed no such injury was sustained after a more thorough examination at ground level.

As part of the rescue, the team said it established a rope rescue system and lowered a team member along with an air ambulance paramedic.

The man was then moved to safer ground, where a more thorough assessment could be carried out, the team added.

A spinal injury was ruled out, and the man was able to walk back to the land ambulance with assistance from two team members.

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team said due to the potential for a difficult stretcher carry, support was also requested from the Edale Mountain Rescue Team.
