Sculptor carves 7ft soldier for Remembrance Day

A Derbyshire sculptor has carved a soldier from a 7ft 3ins (2.2m) wooden log to mark Remembrance Day.
Taking seven weeks to create, Ben Yeates, 43, from Whitwell in Derbyshire, used a chainsaw to transform the log.
The sculpture, called a Soldier's Tear, is designed to depict a British soldier, known as a 'Tommy', with the design taking inspiration from soldiers who fought in World War One and World War Two.
On his creation, Mr Yeates said: "I wanted to do something big that was impressive and create something for people to remember who fought for our freedoms."
Mr Yeates said creating the sculpture was his "hardest carving yet".
"As I have only been carving for a year, I don't have enough equipment to cut a log that size as my chainsaws are too small", said Mr Yeates.
"I’m glad I got through it and pulled it off and I’m over the moon with it.
"I’ve had nothing but great feedback, people have been gobsmacked when they walk past my workshop and see it."
The name, a Soldier's Tear, was created to highlight the people that have been lost on both sides during wars throughout history, said Mr Yeates.
"There’s no need for war and this sculpture stands in solidarity with those who have been lost," he said.
Mr Yeates said the soldier will be placed outside Whitwell Social Club for the weekend of the remembrance service.
