After several threats of closure, House of Fraser in Darlington is staying open

The last remaining branch of House of Fraser in north-east England is to stay open following threats of closure.

A deal has officially been agreed for the chain to remain in Darlington's historic Binns building.

Darlington Borough Council said the store was a "cherished" part of the town's heritage and it was "thrilled" the future of the building had been secured.

The news comes just weeks after House of Fraser announced it was to close in December, following the previous landlord’s decision to terminate the lease.

Now, however, the bright yellow closing down signs have been stripped from the building.

Estate agent Parker Barras Estates has been approached for comment.

'Business as usual'

The council's deputy leader Chris McEwan said: "I'm thrilled to welcome the news that a deal has been confirmed to secure the future of Binns.

"This iconic store has been a cherished part of our town’s heritage, and these latest developments represent a vital boost to our community and local economy.

"With this new chapter, we look forward to seeing Binns continue to flourish in these changing times, and long may it stand as a cornerstone of Darlington’s retail landscape."

A spokesperson for Frasers Group said: "We’re pleased to confirm that House of Fraser Darlington will remain open and is operating business as usual. We’re looking forward to continuing to welcome our valued customers to this location."
