A yellow weather warning for strong winds has been issued across Surrey for New Year's Day.

The Met Office alert comes into effect at 07:00 GMT and lasts until 23:59 on 1 January.

Strong winds are expected to bring gusts starting at 40mph (64.4km/h) across many inland areas and they could reach 60mph (96.5km/h).

The windy conditions could cause transport disruption, power outages and affect coastal areas due to large waves.

The Met Office said people should prepare to protect themselves and their properties.

It said residents should check for loose items outside their homes, including bins, trampolines and fences, and plan how they could be secured.

It added that power cuts could also occur.

In Surrey, the New Year's Day Classic Gathering at Weybridge's Brooklands Museum, which features more than 1,000 modern and classic sports cars, has been rescheduled to 4 January.

Across the UK, some New Year celebrations have been cancelled, including Edinburgh's outdoor Hogmanay celebrations and Blackpool's fireworks display.
