The former amusement arcade would offer banking services to businesses and residents under the plans

A former seaside town amusement arcade could become a banking hub, following new rules on protecting access to cash.

An application for the Holdsworth Amusement Centre on Belle Vue Street, Filey, has been lodged with North Yorkshire Council.

The hubs are designed to enable consumers and small businesses to access cash and offer basic banking services in areas where high street banks have shut.

Banks and building societies must now assess whether areas have reasonable access to money when they close branches.

According to submitted plans, the design of the hub in Filey would be “very much in keeping with the character of the area and the historical character of the building and will have very little impact on surrounding properties”.

The ground floor of the building would be converted under the plans, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said, with new illuminated signs installed on the front of the building.

The first, second and third floors of the early 19th Century mid-terraced site are used as residential flats.

North Yorkshire Council has not set a date for deciding on the application for Filey’s banking hub.
