The family of an eight-year-old boy who was allegedly murdered say he "carried a huge smile wherever he went".
Rhys Cameron died at a house on Marsh House Avenue in Billingham, Stockton-on-Tees, some time between the 13 and 15 September, police said.
Louise Cameron, 40, of Billingham, has been charged with murder and was remanded in custody after appearing at Teesside Crown Court on Friday.
She will next appear at the same court on 6 November.
In a tribute released through Cleveland Police, Rhys's family said: "He had a cheery, funny and beautiful personality and carried a huge smile wherever he went that will forever be remembered.
"His love for listening to music, playing with his friends and toothbrushes brought joy to us all."
The family added they were "devastated" but "take comfort from the words of support" they have received and "the love shown to Rhys".
Specialist officers continue to support Rhys's family.
