The Coundon cycleway in Coventry will be linked with the city centre

Work to permanently link a Coventry cycling route with the city centre will begin later this year, a council has confirmed.

The 1.7-mile Coundon cycleway, from Norman Place Road to Hill Street, was finished in 2023 but included only a temporary link to the centre.

During a meeting of Coventry City Council’s cabinet on Wednesday, councillor Stephen Gray raised concerns that the cycleway “just stops”.

“If you’re going to the city centre, you come to the end of the cycleway, you’re facing oncoming traffic,” he said.

The authority’s director of transport Colin Knight said the link to the city centre had not been completed because the authority was working out separate plans to link Upper Hill Street with the city’s ring road.

Mr Knight said: “We will be in a position later this year to build the permanent section of the Coundon cycleway straight into the city centre.”

Councillors also approved an extension to the cycleway which would link it with developments in Keresley between Tamworth Road and Bennetts Road South.
