Police patrols have been increased after two girls reported a "distressing" incident involving a man wearing a balaclava and carrying a large knife.
Officers were called to Knowle West Health Park in Bristol just before 18:30 BST on Tuesday.
Two 12-year-old girls were on the field when they saw the man, who is described as 6ft tall, white, and dressed in all black.
Avon and Somerset Police said officers went to the scene but did not find the man.
Officers searched the park and spoke to other members of the public, but did not find any other witnesses.
Neighbourhood Sgt Joe Iles said: "This was very distressing for the children and is of course of concern.
"We're not aware of any other similar incidents in this area and will be carrying out uniformed reassurance patrols."
Anybody with information which could help police identify the man is urged to come forward.
