Police patrols have been stepped up in a Nottinghamshire town after a girl was seriously sexually assaulted.

The girl was assaulted in an alleyway off St Mary’s Memorial Gardens, Newark-on-Trent, at about 19:45 GMT on Thursday.

Nottinghamshire Police said there had been a heightened police activity in the area while investigations took place.

The force said it was being treated as an "isolated incident".

Det Insp Stuart Barson said: “While incidents of this nature are extremely rare, they are obviously very concerning for the public.

"We are treating this as an isolated incident and I would like to reassure people we have a large team of officers working on this investigation and we are doing everything we can to find those responsible."

The force has urged anyone with any information about the assault to contact the force.
