Historical human remains have been discovered near the Ulster Canal in Clones, County Monaghan.
Gardaí (Irish police) said they attended the scene on Sunday evening and located a human skull on a nearby embankment.
It was found by a member of the public called Seány McCleary who then alerted An Garda Síochána (the Irish police service).
Mr McCleary, who is from the nearby village of Glaslough, told BBC News NI that he was out with his family near the marina when he spotted the top of the skull sticking out from the grass.
"The marina is very busy with kayakers and boats and I just spotted it a few feet away from us up on the bank while we were down on the walkway," he said.
The skull has since been taken away for further forensic examination.
