Fire at Peaky Blinders textile mill 'suspicious'

Dalton Mills in Keighley, West Yorkshire, has seen two fires in quick succession

Police have confirmed that a fire at a derelict textile mill in West Yorkshire is being treated as arson.

Crews were called to the fire at Dalton Mills in Keighley on Sunday at 19:20 BST and the circumstances are "believed to be suspicious".

A further fire broke out at about 07:15 BST on Monday. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the the cause of the second incident is currently unknown.

The 19th Century building was used as a set for the filming of period drama Peaky Blinders, as well as parts of Downton Abbey.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious or who has any information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact officers."

A fire service spokesperson also said an investigation into both incidents would take place once the structure had been made safe.

In 2022 the mill was nearly destroyed by another fire and two youths were charged with arson.

A Heritage England report later found it did not need to be demolished.
