Cambridge City Council has been looking at ways to redevelop the houses in Ekin Road for many years

Plans to demolish flats and several houses on an estate considered "substandard" by residents have taken a step forward following a council meeting.

Cambridge City Council wants to redevelop the council homes in Ekin Road.

A complete demolition of all the homes was one of the options on the table.

But on Tuesday, the council's housing scrutiny committee voted in favour, external of a partial redevelopment.

There are about 122 homes and the local authority said 14 houses towards the south of the estate would not be demolished, the Local Democracy Reporting Service wrote.

Local people have had differing views on how to redevelop the site.

At the meeting, resident Darren Easton argued “every single property should be demolished to let Ekin Road have a new lease of life”.

However, Maurice Chiodo, from the Save Ekin Road campaign group, called for a further six homes on the estate to be saved.
