Family-run clothing store to close after 128 years

A family-run men's clothing store has announced plans to close after 128 years of serving customers in East Grinstead.
Broadleys, which opened in 1896, is closing its doors in the High Street due to retirement and financial challenges.
Current owner Simon Broadley said: “Having been in the business for 44 years we will certainly miss the building and the customers especially."
The closure also comes after "difficult economic conditions" have made it unviable for Mr Broadley's son, Alex, to carry on the business.
Alex Broadley said: “It’s something we have taken a long time to consider but there was no other option.
"As much I’d like to take on the business, I’m just not in a financial position to take it on sadly."
The owners have recognised the "remarkable journey" that began with George Broadley.
Des Dearlove, a second generation customer, said the store has been an "institution" for East Grinstead "for generations".
He said his father had an account at the store and it did not occur to him as a child that he would one day also shop at Broadleys.
He said he was shocked to realise the store would be closing and he found it sad it was "no longer viable in the modern world".
Simon Broadley said: “We’ve greatly enjoyed our time here in East Grinstead and we will certainly miss all our customers who travel all across county to come to our store."
His son added: "It will be a very sad day to see it go. It’s been something I’ve known all my life."
The shop's closing down sale starts on 16 May.
