Work to create a new leisure centre in Nottinghamshire is due to get under way in early 2025.

Olympian Rebecca Adlington, from Mansfield, visited the site of the venue in Bramcote on Wednesday with councillors.

Broxtowe Borough Council approved a plan to build a new leisure centre to replace the current facility in Derby Road earlier this year.

On Friday, deputy leader Greg Marshall said the authority expected to have "spades in the ground" by next spring and the build was expected to take one year.

The new centre will be built on the site in Derby Road.

While the work takes place to build the new facility, the current leisure centre would remain open, the deputy leader said.

After sharing rough plans with Adlington, Marshall said the swimming Olympic medallist was "very excited".

"It's not every day that you get to meet a four-time Olympic champion and it's lovely to have her approval," he said.

Marshall added he remembered swimming at the centre as a child and while many people still used it, he described it as being "tired" and "in need of change".

Leisure provision is not a statutory responsibility of local authorities, but Marshall said the council believed it was " absolutely crucial".

It is hoped the new leisure centre will cater to swimming teams, for training and competitions, as well as the wider community.

"We're pleased to be giving the people of Broxtowe something to look forward to," he added.
