Private plane crashes at airfield

A witness said they heard a "loud bang" but there was no "visible fire"

A private plane has crashed at a well-known airfield.

Emergency services were called to Imperial War Museum (IWM) Duxford in Cambridgeshire at about 13:41 GMT.

A spokesperson for the airfield said the site closed to visitors for the remainder of the afternoon.

An eyewitness, who asked to remain anonymous, said he heard a "loud bang" but that there was no "visible fire".

"I turned and saw the aircraft had taken off, then was turning sharply towards the control tower," said the man.

"The wing caught the ground and it crashed."

IWM Duxford confirmed there was an incident involving a private aircraft.

Various fire service crews attended the scene

An IWM Duxford spokesperson confirmed emergency services were at the scene and that the plane was a "private aircraft".

"IWM Duxford is closing to visitors for the remainder of this afternoon," they explained.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said several crews that attended had since returned to their stations.

"We assisted other emergency services and carried out scene safety," a fire spokesperson said.

The Air Accident Investigations Branch (AAIB) said it had opened a case regarding the incident.

A spokesperson said: "A multi-disciplinary team of AAIB inspectors has deployed to Duxford, Cambridgeshire, to begin investigating an accident involving a light aircraft."
