A long-running roadworks scheme causing delays on part of the A1 and A1(M) in West Yorkshire aims to be finished by Christmas.

Work to repair two bridges at Wentbridge, near Pontefract, began in February 2023, but the completion date was pushed back after defects were discovered.

Both carriageways are reduced to single lanes through the roadworks, leading to repeated tailbacks in the area for West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire drivers.

"We'd like to thank drivers and people living in the area for their patience while we have delivered these important and at times complex repairs," said National Highways.

John Stebbing, a programme delivery manager for the firm, acknowledged the disruption drivers had faced and said the end "was now in sight".

"We plan to remove all traffic management in both directions this December in time for Christmas, subject to progress and weather," National Highways said.

Both lanes on the northbound carriageway will reopen by 06:00 BST on 24 October.

The lanes will be temporarily narrowed and a 50mph speed limit in place, with the route shut between 20:00 and 06:00 for three nights from 21 October.

The repairs have focused on the Grade II listed Wentbridge viaduct, which carries the A1 over the River Went, and the nearby Wentedge Road bridge.

Wentedge Road bridge reopened last month, with work on the viaduct due to finish shortly.

Work on the southbound carriageway will continue into December, with the current lane closure due to switch soon.

To make that change, the road will be closed between 20:00 and 06:00 for five nights from 29 October.
