One person suffered a serious leg injury after being hit by a car following an argument in a North Tyneside car park, police have said.

Officers were called to Hadrian Road, Wallsend, on Thursday shortly after 13:15 GMT, to reports that a group had been involved in a "verbal disagreement".

Police said the person who was injured had "attempted to intervene" when they were then struck by a vehicle, which made off from the scene.

A 36-year-old woman from Longbenton was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, and later charged with a number of offences.

She appeared before magistrates in Newcastle on Saturday and has been remanded in custody ahead a crown court appearance in March, Northumbria Police said.

The person who was injured was taken to hospital and has been discharged. No further details about them have been released.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses, especially those with CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage.
