Part of the A18 Mountain Road is set to close to tackle running water on a section of the carriageway, which could lead to dangerous icy driving conditions.

The Department of Infrastructure said the drainage works would focus on a section of the TT course known as Casey's, which is just north of the Veranda.

The road was closed overnight on Friday due to police concerns over ice after temperatures dropped.

The road is due to shut between 09:30 and 15:30 GMT on Tuesday.

The A18, which is the main route between the Manx capital and the north of the island, will be closed from Ramsey to the Bungalow during the works.

However, the road will remain open from the Bungalow to the Creg Ny Baa and access via the Tholt Y Will Road will also be maintained.

A spokesman for the Department of Infrastructure said the work would deal with the “continuing issue” of water on the carriageway, with an aim to prevent further closures in cold weather in future.

He said: “The works to be undertaken are intended to effect an immediate improvement.

“It is not yet known whether more extensive drainage work will be required beyond what can be achieved during this closure."

If further work was needed, it would be carried out as part of a programmed schedule of works “at some other point in the future”, he added.
