An annual swimming competition in Devon has been cancelled amid the yellow weather warning for wind in the south west.

The Dart 10K outdoor swim from Totnes to Galmpton was scheduled for Saturday and Sunday but had to be cancelled due to "exceptional weather conditions making the swim too difficult to manage safely", organisers have said.

Dart Harbour and Navigation Authority said more than 1,600 swimmers had been expected to take part in the two-day event.

"We know how disappointing this news is for everyone who has trained hard and was looking forward to the event," the authority said on social media, external.

Organisers asked people for their safety not to attempt to swim the route outside of the event as conditions remain unstable and there was no support in place.

It added: "We look forward to welcoming swimmers back to the River Dart under safe and positive conditions in the future."

The Met Office said there was a yellow warning for wind on Sunday through to Monday as there would be "some particularly strong winds in coastal and upland regions".
