A retired police dog who spent his days sniffing out drugs, guns and dirty money has found his forever home.

PD Sam recently hung up his badge to enjoy what handlers called a "well-earned retirement".

West Midlands Police had issued a call-out to prospective dog owners who could take in PD Sam, as well as two other force canines who were not quite cut out for a life of fighting crime.

Now, after schoolboy Elliott wrote to the force to say he thought Sam was paw-some, the old boy has found his new home.

"Sam is well and truly settling into retirement life and is even treated to warm sausages every morning," the force said.

Elliott's letter of thanks to the force read: "Thank you for letting me have Sammy. I promise I will love him and look after him for you."

The force also attempted to find a home for Chloe, a 16-month-old German Shepherd and Ran, a nine-month-old Belgian Malinois. Both had not quite made the required grade for patrol work.

Officers said Ran would be going to her forever home next week, while Chloe had lots of potential new owners booked in to see her.

The "extremely loveable" duo are currently based at the West Midlands Police Dog Training Centre in Coventry.
