Policy and Resources recommended a budget of £7m for the maintenance of social housing

Guernsey's politicians have voted against plans to increase the budget for social housing maintenance.

A total of 21 States members rejected the proposal for a £670,000 uplift to next year's budget, while 12 supported it.

Policy and Resources (P&R) had recommended Employment and Social Security (ESS) should get £7m to cover the maintenance of social housing.

ESS President Peter Roffey admitted the States was not as good a landlord as it could be for social housing tenants.

He warned without this increase to his committee's budget, the island's social housing stock would deteriorate.
