Part of the A1 was closed for several hours and traffic diverted after a serious collision.

National Highways said the road was shut northbound between the A428 at Wyboston in Bedfordshire and the B645 for St Neots, Cambridgeshire, while the southbound carriageway was closed at the A428 junction.

Bedfordshire Police said emergency services were called just before 08:00 BST and urged drivers to avoid the area.

Northbound drivers were advised to follow the diversion route marked by a solid X on signs, with southbound traffic diverted via the entry and exit slip roads.

The southbound carriageway was reported to have reopened shortly after 14:00 BST, followed by the northbound carriageway about an hour later.
