An 18-year-old woman, who was a passenger in a car, has died in a crash.

It happened in Hartlepool at about 04:20 BST on a road known locally as Greatham Back Lane, which is between the A689 and Greatham village, Cleveland Police said.

The silver Renault Clio came off the road and hit a tree, officers said, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and other driving offences.

The A689 was closed for several hours following the crash.

Police said the woman's family was being supported by specially trained officers.

Anyone who saw what happened, or who has CCTV or dashcam of the car in the village, has been asked to contact the force.
