Man seriously injured by car on main commuter road

A man was seriously injured when he was hit by a car on a major city route in Birmingham.

Traffic was left at a standstill after the crash on the A45 Coventry Road, near to the junction with Barrows Lane at about 14:20 BST.

The car driver remained at the scene and was spoken to by officers, after the victim, thought to be aged in his 70s, was taken to hospital, West Midlands Police said.

The eastbound stretch of the route remained closed at about 17:30, between the junctions of Brays Road and Horse Shoes Lane.

The air ambulance was called to the scene, but the victim was later taken by road to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

West Midlands Roads had posted on X, external just after 15:00 BST that traffic was stationary out of the city around Brays Road.

National Express West Midlands has said the 60, X1 and X2 bus services were diverting, external from the city via Brays Road, Barrows Lane, Common Lane and Sheaf Lane.

It apologised for any disruption to people's journeys.
