A charity in Hull that helps people struggling with drugs, alcohol or problems at home has been forced to temporarily close after its premises were vandalised.

In a statement posted on social media, ReNew said its building in Beverley Road suffered "significant damage" on Tuesday night.

"We are working diligently to assess the situation and make the necessary repairs," it read.

Humberside Police said officers were appealing for information following reports that windows at the premises had been smashed.

Commenting on the temporary closure, the post read: "We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we work to restore our building to ensure a safe environment for everyone.

"We will update you as soon as we are able to reopen.

"The safety of our staff and people that use our service is our top priority."

Other services and planned activities not held at the Beverley Road site were unaffected, the charity added.

In response to the post, one person described it as "mindless hooliganism", adding that the charity made a real difference to people's lives.

Others said they could not understand why anyone would do this.
