A horse has died after being spooked by two out-of-control dogs and getting stuck in a peat bog.

Police are appealing for information about the incident, which involved two brown spaniels, in Shenval Forest in Glen Urquhart on the Affric Kintail Way in July.

Officers said the dogs charged at two riderless horses being hacked through the woods. The horses were spooked and ran off.

They were later found in a peat bog and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spent several hours trying to free them.

One of the horses was so badly injured it had to be put down.

Police said the dogs were seen getting out of a white van with a man, just before the incident at 18:00 on Thursday 24 July.

They are appealing for witnesses, external who may have seen the man with the dogs, and the van he was driving.
