Weekend closure plan for busy A47 stretch

The full diversion from the Easton roundabout to Dereham, in either direction, will send drivers about 64 miles (102km) via Thetford and Swaffham

Drivers are being warned of plans to close a busy section of the A47 in Norfolk over a weekend, as part of £300m dual carriageway works.

Two additional lanes and two new junctions are being built on a 5.5-mile (8.9 km) stretch between North Tuddenham and Easton.

The full closure affects the road from the Easton roundabout to the Dereham interchange, between 20:00 GMT on 14 November and 06:00 on 17 November.

A National Highways spokesperson said diversions would be put in place.

The A47 is the main east-west trunk road across Norfolk, linking Lowestoft in Suffolk to Cambridgeshire and the Midlands

National Highways also warned there would be an overnight closure between the Easton roundabout and the Longwater interchange from 20:00 on 15 November to 06:00 the following day.

Work began on the scheme in October.

It was delayed by 20 months due to legal challenges lodged by environmental campaigners.

The A47 runs between Lowestoft and Leicester, and passes Norwich, King's Lynn, Wisbech and Peterborough.

It is considered one of Norfolk's most dangerous roads and it has a number of pinch points due to increasing levels of traffic.

National Highways said it hopes to have the upgrade opened by spring 2027.
