A fire at a thatched cottage in the New Forest that firefighters have worked through the night to put out is being treated as suspected arson by police.

The fire broke out at the house on the A35 Lyndhurst Road in Hinton on the Hampshire/Dorset border on Monday shortly before 21:00 GMT.

Firefighters and 10 fire engines from Hampshire and Dorset Fire and Rescue Services along with an aerial ladder platform worked into the early hours of Tuesday to bring the flames under control.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary is urging anyone with information to come forward.

The fire service said there was no one in the property at the time and the cause of the fire had yet to be established.

Residents living nearby were advised to keep doors and windows closed due to the large amount of smoke overnight.
