Plans to transform a former place of worship to make way for a hairdressing business have been submitted.

Sunderland City Council's planning department has received proposals for a building off Westerhope Road in the Barmston area of the city's Washington East Ward to turn a large prayer hall area into a space for a salon.

The rest of the site would be used as storage, toilets and a CCTV room.

It is believed the building was the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. A decision is expected by 26 December after a consultation.

The planning application does not provide details of employment or hours of opening for the proposed development, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
