Shropshire Council has put out a warning after fake QR codes were put up on some pay and display parking machines in Shrewsbury.

It posted on its Facebook account alongside a photograph of a fake code on Claremont Street.

The local authority said it did not use QR codes on any of its machines.

"These codes link to a fraudulent website. Please do not scan the code. If you do - or have done - please don’t supply your bank details," the post said.

"If you see one of these QR code stickers - in Shrewsbury or elsewhere - please gently remove it if you can and/or report it to us."

Similar scams have been highlighted across the West Midlands, including in Telford.

In September, Telford and Wrekin Council also said some residents had been sent fraudulent links via text message, telling them to pay fake penalty charge notices.
