A health care watchdog has raised "serious and significant concerns" about a care home in the Scottish Borders.

The Care Inspectorate has served Park Homes with an improvement notice, external for its St Andrew's Care Home in Hawick following an inspection.

It has ordered that "thorough" deep cleaning be carried out, and fire exits are kept clear and in "good working order".

Park Homes told BBC Scotland News it took all concerns "very seriously".

The Care Inspectorate has also required that sufficient staffing levels were in place, and ordered an upgrade of internal facilities.

A spokesperson said: "An inspection has identified serious and significant concerns about the quality of care experienced by residents at St Andrew's Care Home in Hawick.

"We understand this is a difficult and distressing time for residents, their families and staff at the service.

"Because of our concerns we have issued an improvement notice. This sets out the significant improvements that must be made within a specified time frame."

'High standards'

Park Homes said it was "immensely grateful" to the care team at St Andrew's Care Home.

A spokesperson said: "We take all concerns very seriously and are working with all our internal and external stakeholders to address any identified shortcomings from our normal high standards as quickly as possible.

"Above all, our number one priority is ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our residents, and we are very proud to routinely receive positive feedback from them and their families."
